About
I started as a research volunteer in the Bourdeau lab focused on sea star wasting monitoring and sea star intraspecific morphological changes. I completed a Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology from Humboldt State University in 2018. After, I became a field technician for MARINe and pursued an MS in the Burnaford Lab focused on kelp community ecology in southern California and Northern Washington in collaboration with University of Washington. I completed a Masters of Science from CSU Fullerton in 2021. I also completed an REU internship at Oregon State University in 2017 with Sarah Henkel, who's lab I have returned to pursue a PhD. For my PhD, I am studying kelp ecology specifically in Oregon intertidal kelps and how their physiology is impacted by marine heatwaves and how their fluctuating presence in the intertidal impacts the rest of the community.
Outside of research, I am extremely passionate about education. I aspire to be a full time teaching professor with a strong research background. I have worked as a TA at the university level for over 5 years and work with local non-profit education groups in Oregon to create ocean based curriculum. I am extremely dedicated to making the sciences more accessible to everyone including historically excluded demographics. I have completed a Graduate Certificate in College and University Teaching at Oregon State University. I hold current leaderships roles in OSU SACNAS (Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science), Western Society of Naturalists and OSU Equity Justice and Inclusion Committee. I have assisted in developing new curriculum for a Difference, Power and Oppression course related to Marine Justice and have previously presented/coordinated workshops related to Sex and Gender in Biology Classrooms and Decolonizing Science.
