Academic Mentorship Roles

Our Future is Science (Aspen Institute)                                                        (November 2024-Current)
Virtual mentorship program that pairs graduate STEM students with high school students to craft a capstone project. As a mentor, I am responsible for guiding the projects of two high students from underrepresented groups in science. With a co-mentor, our team of four meets weekly via zoom and tackles different goals to lead to a final capstone project. Each high school student is challenged with deciding on a question related to real-world challenges in their communities. The team builds evidence-based solutions together that the high school student will build into some deliverable format like a podcast, oral presentation or YouTube video.
Multicultural Scholars Program (Oregon State University)                         (December 2024-Current)
In person mentorship program that pairs graduate STEM students with third- and fourth-year undergraduate students at Oregon State University. The goals of the program are to recruit, retain, and graduate MSP undergraduate scholars from migrant and seasonal farm worker backgrounds. As a Female, Mexican and First-Generation Student, I am responsible for guiding the students through the challenges of undergraduate degrees without the support of legacy family knowledge. I am tasked with helping them make goals each term and achieve those goals such as applying for paid summer internships and graduate school applications. I also work to build their professional development and invite them to as many workshops and conferences that are relevant to their research and academic success.
